Wondering about how you will travel within London during your trip? Don't panic because right here we will cover everything you must and want to know if you're planning a trip! These information will be useful to you, no mater if you want to participate on New Year's Eve party, visit London to see attractions, interested in London culture, or any other event!

Complete getting around London guide!

This little guide will cover important facts written in my other posts about London travel, transport and such.. But will also add some extra things like maps, planners and more..

So, let's start!
Let's assume you are amused about traveling to London, spending some time there to see the Town, some attractions, maybe some event, or even experience nightlife.. So you took piece of paper, have opened Notepad or Word document and you plan to put all the important things together with cost on the paper.
What you should include there, must be:
  • Bus or airplane tickets cost, driving or flight times, arrival and leaving times
  • Hotel or hostel accommodation and costs
  • Transport within London costs, maps and routes
  • Event planner
I will cover all of these areas together with some suggestions about events.

Fight time and costs varies a lot depending on where you are coming from! As I don't know if you plan to travel solo or with family, I will provide you some calculators where you will have to enter number of people and age to get correct cost of getting there and back to your place.

At this link you can do booking to find out the cost of flight if you plan to use Airplane.
At this link you can do booking to find out the cost if you plan to use Bus.

Ok, so now when you know how long traveling to there and back will take, you can write down those on your planer and calculate starting and arrival times to fit everything else, for example hotel booking and such..
As for that, you will have to decide what type or accommodation you want. Depending on your budget you can choose between few options:
  • Budget hotels, 2-star;
  • Mid-range hotels, 3-star;
  • Luxury hotels, 4-star;
  • Deluxe hotels, 5-star;
Hotel Verta

You can find list of hotels here, and in depth list of hotels here.
After you decide which one you want, call them and book your time!

Oyster cardTime to move on to the transport within London.
There are several ways to move around this iconic city and those are: The Tube, Cabs and Bus.
First of all you will want to get so called Oyster card which will save you nice amount of money.
You can get one fast and easy. Most stations across the London  have at least one ticket machine where you can get your oyster card. Minimum deposit is ~7.45usd which is £5, and the biggest is up to £50. You will need your credit card like Visa or MasterCard in order to get one.

Now you are wondering how to reach the Hotel you have booked. Don't worry, you can plan all that even from your home. Here is the map of The Tube and Bus routes. There is always an option to use a cab.

Standard Tube map.
Central London Bus map.
Central London night Bus map.
North West London bus map.
North East London bus map.
South West London bus map.

If you have a young child or you are unable to walk the stairs please do check this Avoiding Stairs Tube Guide.

For more details and prices please refer to my older posts about London transport:
Great! Now you should have first three points of this guide covered.. prices, times and everything written on paper!
The only one left is events. Well at this point I would have to contact you and see what you are interested in and what you like so I can provide the list that will be fun to you but as I can't do that, I will just put some suggestions from all of the areas:

New Year's Eve 2013 .. this one you shouldn't miss at all. I have even made entire post about it which you can find here.
Cultural events like visiting museums and cultural places. More about it can be found on Culture section of this website and within London's Most Visited Tourist Attractions post.
Extraordinary nightlife!.. more info about that can be found on Nightlife section of this website.

That would be all and I hope you have found this guide useful. Wish you a nice trip and have a great time!

British Firm Produces Petrol From Air

Every day we are listening about world going into crisis because of fuel. It can be in many ways, from the pollution of the nature, to the exhaustion of resources. Well, the problem might be gone in few years thanks to one company named Air Fuel Synthesis (AFS). They claim that they have made to produce the petrol from the air using a small refinery that synthesis the fuel from carbon dioxide and water vapour and by that, they have reached the first place leaving Jesus with His water into wine experiment on a second place.

British Firm Produces Petrol From Air

The whole process:
Air is blown into a tower filled with a mist of sodium hydroxide solution. The carbon dioxide in the air reacts with some of the sodium hydroxide to form sodium carbonate.
This sodium carbonate is then electrolysed to release the carbon dioxide, which is collected and stored.
A dehumidifier condenses water out of the same air passed into the tower, with this condensed water then passed into an electrolyser where it is split into hydrogen and oxygen.
The carbon dioxide and hydrogren are reacted together to make a hydrocarbon mixture, with reaction conditions varied depending on the kind of fuel required.
The product can then be mixed with the same additives used in current fuels to ease starting, burn cleanly and avoid corrosion problems. Otherwise it can be blended directly with gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel.

New Year's Eve 2013

Newwwwwww Yearaaaaaar'ss Eveeeee!!!!

Did you feel as I did after screaming this phrase up there? Nothing better then letting your neighbourhood know that you are starting to plan New year's eve celebration while drinking coffe on a balcony reading this topic. And for those at work I hope your mood will be lift up too!

If you already haven't, it's about time to catch the last train planning the thing. And as you are reading this topic, I will do my best to bring you the feeling of famous London party that is coming to daylight, or should I say nightlight. First of all, let's remember how it was one year ago.

Looks good right? Yeaaahhh..
So if you're up for watching how night sky turns into series of beautiful colors, stay with me. Doesn't matter if you are a lovely couple looking for romantic experience of your life, or you are planning a trip for your family, this will be the event where everybody will find the feeling that they have been looking for. Knowing of fireworks experts in London, as they have shown their skills during the Olympics, it will be awesome!

The main fireworks begins at like ten minutes before midnight but if you don't wanna get stuck, good advise is to get to the location before 7pm as the roads will be closed at 8pm. Fireworks it's self is located beneath the London Eye, but will be visible from anywhere you can see The Eye. Best views will be from the South Bank, Westminster Bridge, Victoria Embankment and Waterloo Bridge. However, be warned that entrance to the most of these places will be closed at 8pm so if you want good view, you should go there earlier. There are like 1400 hotels near the main event but do not wait for the last moments because there might be like 700 000 or more people!

The cost and reservations

There are many agencies which offer the whole service that includes traveling, accommodation and the main event. The price can depend on which one you choose and where are you from, but I will provide you with some info based on London it's self . One room for two-three people by the time around the New years eve might cost  €400 -  €1000 per night in the hotel. Keep in mind that this info is based on hotels nearest to the main event and by the nearest date, usually prices are a lot lower! So choose from the list of hotels and book there, or you can do booking from the booking website.

 More info about flight cost is available by choosing one of the Airports and booking tickets.

Now that we know approximate how much airplane will cost, we can move to the next things. First we will need to choose the hotel and by that we will have to choose how we will reach hotel from the airport.
One advice I can give you about choosing hotels is that try to pick one nearest to the places or events you wanna participate in. Now you may think like.. of course, I am not stupid and I don't need to hear advices like that, but you would be surprised how many people forget about facts like this. Therefore, I will continue to write "useless" things like that.
When it's about hotels, London can offer you wide range of good to the extraordinary places to stay which will satisfy all your needs. All depending and well sorted by the money you are willing to spend here are options:
  • Budget hotels, 2-star;
  • Mid-range hotels, 3-star;
  • Luxury hotels, 4-star;
  • Deluxe hotels, 5-star;
You can find list of hotels here, and in depth list of hotels here. No matter which one you choose, you will be pleased by hospitality.

Prices can depend, but here are some averages so you know what to expect (per person):
  • 100-180usd per night for mid-range hotels;
  • 150-300usd per night for luxury hotels;
Now that you have chosen your place to stay, let's focus on transport from the airport to the hotel, and around the London city to the events and places you want to visit.

I strongly recommend getting so called Oyster card which will reduce transport cost by a lot! You can get one fast and easy and most stations across the London  have at least one ticket machine where you can get your oyster card. Minimum deposit is ~7.45usd which is £5, and the biggest is up to £90.
So lets assume you have booked your hotel from your home, and arrived by plane at the airport. Now you have the option to call the cab (or "grab" the cab at the airport) or use other one of the transport services. Good idea would be to check if you can buy an oyster card at the airport right away.
For detailed description about London transport please visit our page where it's all well described.

And that's it!!! London can offer many events & places where you can have fun, learn the culture, do shopping, explore and many many more! There is something for everyone and by that being said let me provide you one short list which can serve you as some kind of planner:

London Tour From USA

First of all.. the timezone. While the most common timezones in the USA are PDT MDT CDT EDT, it is different from the timezone that people use in London which  is GMT. Let's start with the Daylight Saving Time. Since 2007 Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March. Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. DST is 1 hour ahead of normal standard time usually called Central time (CT).

This article will be expressed in GMT timezone so it's important for you to know which time it is at your place for the given time in GMT timezone. GMT was established in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference, when it was decided to place the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England.

London at night

How to calculate timezones? Simple, check the text below.
(the below time is expressed in DST so if you are in CT now just deduct 1 hour)

For the GMT = Greenwich Mean Time == 10:00:00 am:
  • PDT = Pacific Daylight Time == 03:00:00 am
  • PST = Pacific Standard Time == 03:00:00 am
  • MDT = Mountain Daylight Time == 04:00:00 am
  • MST = Mountain Standard Time == 04:00:00 am
  • CDT = Central Daylight Time == 05:00:00 am
  • CST = Central Standard Time == 05:00:00 am
  • EDT = Eastern Daylight Time == 06:00:00 am
  • EST = Eastern Standard Time == 06:00:00 am

Ok now lets get onto interesting things! You will have to pick one of the Airports. But regardless which one you choose, you can rely on the following (based on round-trip which means to London and back and with 1 week between flights):
Flight time is around 7-8 hours - one way (depending from where do you start).
Flight cost (can depend on chosen airport and station, the lowest number is ticket from the airport and the highest number is ticket from travel agency, numbers are average calculation from few airports/agencies):
  • for adults (18-64) around 560-870usd;
  • for senior (65+) around 560-870usd;
  • for adult with one child (0-17) around 1100-1700usd;
  • for two adults around 1100-1700usd;
  • for two adults with one child around 1700-2500usd;
  • for two adults with two children around 2200-3350usd;
  • for two adults with three children around 3000-4150usd;
  • for senior with one child around 1100-1700usd;

Travel To & Within London By Bus

The London Red Bus is one of London's principal icons, the archetypal red rear-entrance Routemaster being recognized worldwide. Although the Routemaster has now been largely phased out of service, with only two heritage routes still using the vehicles, the majority of buses in London are still red and therefore the red double-decker bus remains an iconic symbol of the city.

Red bus

The London bus service is still popular way of transport within London. However, if you're planning to visit London from Europe or some other destinations, you should devote attention to the other bus services that are in charge of that.
So with this being said, there are few bus categories that exist:

Modern double or single-decker bus

Modern red busThe local bus network in London is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world. Over 6,800 scheduled buses operate on over 700 different routes. Over the year this network carries over 1.8 billion passenger journeys. As for the fares, a single-journey adult bus ticket within London costs £2 with a few exceptions. Children under 16, and full-time education people under 18 travel for free. However, if you own an Oyster card, single-journey will cost you 90p. Another version of the bus ticket is one-day bus pass and it costs £3. Weekly ticket costs £13 and monthly £42.30.
You can find more info on this website.

The Night bus is a special version of the London red bus which operates during the nighttime. Every unit that is considered as a night bus has prefix N. It usually operates between midnight and 4:30 am.

Intercontinental bus

National Express busThere are few international bus companies and some of them are:

National Express (0870 580 8080) - all the info you need, like the costs, can be found on their website.
Megabus (0900 160 0900) - in other instance is the service where you pay per minute (60p), if you want to visit their website for the more info, here it is.
Green Line (0870 608 7261) - smaller company with main routes, you can visit their website here.
Eurolines (0870 514 3219) - connections with continental Europe, visit their website here.

Travel Within London By Black Cabs

Black Cabs
As much famous as the London red bus is also taxicab better known as Black Cabs. You can hire a cab when the yellow sign is lit. As for the fares, minimum charge is £2.2 with 336meters included, and by every next 168m you will pay additional 20p. But fares can be more expensive overnight and at evenings. Many of people have heard of Computer Cabs which actually means that you can order a cab via phone. You will pay £2 of booking fee plus the cost to get to you and plus your fare of course. Be aware that pre-booking can be only done by using a credit card.
Another concept of the London taxi is Zingo taxi which locates you by using the GPS to mobile phone system. By other words it means that black-cab driver gets in contact with you by mobile phone and then you can describe what is your exact location. For this service you will pay £1.6 fee which is calculated in the final price. Using Zingo taxi can be great idea at late night when it almost impossible to get a free cab, but if the service can't provide a vehicle for you (and that means one of the 1000 which they have working) you will be redirected to the computer cab service.

Zingo taxiThere is another cheaper version of black cabs and those are called minicabs.
